A good template makes the reading order obvious. It should help a recruiter scan the page and help a parser extract the same facts. Decoration matters less than hierarchy, spacing and clean text.

Prefer one clear reading order

Single-column layouts reduce ambiguity. Put your name and contact details first, then use conventional section headings. Keep dates next to the roles they describe.

Match the tone to the work

A compact layout can help a senior candidate manage dense experience. A graduate layout can give projects and education enough weight. The underlying structure should remain plain in both.

  • Professional: balanced for most specialist roles.
  • Executive: restrained type and more space around leadership evidence.
  • Technical: quick access to skills, systems and project outcomes.

Test the exported file

Copy all text from the finished PDF into a plain-text editor and check the order. Upload it to the target application, then inspect every parsed field before submitting.
