A follow-up is most useful when it refers to a real application, respects the employer’s stated process and gives the recipient enough context to act without repeating your whole CV.

Check the published timeline first

Read the confirmation email and job page for closing dates or review timelines. If the employer says candidates will hear after a deadline, wait until that period has passed.

Use an appropriate contact

Reply to a real application contact or use a professional address published by the employer. Do not guess personal email addresses or send the same message to unrelated employees.

Keep the message specific

State the role, application date and one sentence about the relevant evidence you bring. Ask whether there is an updated timeline, thank the reader and avoid repeated messages when no reply arrives.
